The Biddle family crest, as pictured here within a Navy ensignia, is properly described in heraldic terms as "Argent, three double brackets sable."According to James Parker's Glossary of Terms Used in Heraldry orginally published in 1894 this is the only instance of the "bracket" device in heraldry, which would account for the variations in it's shape.
